No Comments 159 Views

Dreamkid has been making waves in the synthwave and synthpop scene, crafting music that feels like a neon-drenched love letter to the ‘80s. With a sound that blends cinematic nostalgia, atmospheric synths, and modern production techniques, Dreamkid’s work resonates with fans of retro-futurism and electronic storytelling alike.

In this interview, we explore the pivotal moments that shaped his artistic journey, the influences that drive his signature sound, and what’s next for him, including a new album with a futuristic, post-apocalyptic twist. From late-night bike rides to classic video game nostalgia, Dreamkid lets us into his creative process, giving us a glimpse behind the glowing synth lines that define his work.

1. Describe a pivotal music moment for you in your favourite film, television show, brand partnership etc. Has this influenced any of your own compositions?

I’d definitely say the soundtrack in the movie Drive, I wasn’t aware of synthwave at that time and I was blown away. The YouTube channel New Retro Wave confirmed that for me too.

2. What first drew you to making Synthwave/Synthpop

I’ve always loved atmospheric synth sounds and the idea of nostalgia so it was the perfect music movement in my opinion. I found a lot of the scene on Instagram during lockdown and

that’s when I decided that I wanted to be a part of it.

3. What does your current software/hardware setup currently consist of?

Novation Launchkey 37 MK4 and Novation Launchkey Mini 25 MK4 MIDI controllers. MacBook Pro, Studio One DAW and Audient iD4 audio interface. I use vst plugins like Diva and BA-1.

4. Who are your biggest influences, both inside and outside of the genre?

Movies like Thrashin’, Turbo Kid and Flight of the Navigator. I also listen to a lot of non synth bands like Bring Me The Horizon and Blink-182. I find inspiration in their songwriting melodies.

5. Outside of music, what art forms or experiences inspire you the most? Are you pulling from sci-fi films, old video games, cityscapes at night?

Definitely old video games like Street Fighter, California Games and Vice City. Those games influence me a lot and of course all the classic 80s films

6. When you sit down to create, what’s the first thing that sparks the process? A melody? A feeling? A memory?

Definitely a feeling that starts off my process. I use my imagination a lot too

7. Do you have any personal rituals or habits when writing or producing, things that get you in the right headspace? (e.g., late-night drives, dim lighting, a specific synth always within reach)

My process is very scattered, I find it difficult having a routine when it comes to creating. It’s not spreadsheets and you have to be in the right mood. I often go for a cycle late at night though and that helps me think of ideas.

8. Please suggest an album for us to listen to.

The ‘To Live and Die in L.A.’ movie soundtrack by Wang Chung

9. Looking ahead, what’s next? A new album? A shift in sound? Something totally unexpected?

A new 3rd album, going for a more futuristic apocalypse Mad Max vibe and also to do some more songs for movies as well as touring.

10. If you could collaborate with anyone, from any era or genre, who would it be and what would that track sound like?

I’d love to do a track with Sammy Hagar on vocals. Similar to Van Halen’s 5150 album.
