Interview with synth electronic music producer Radiant Baby

Music producer Felix Mongeon a.k.a Radiant Baby has released his latest album Pantomime via Lisbon Lux. Each track is packed with synthwave delight, including the heavily instrumental and electronic track ‘Talkback’. This track is kind of a delightfully odd one out on the overall album, as it breaks from structured lyrics. Listening to this track feels like you are absorbing the last few bittersweet minutes of sunshine before it disappears. Felix has a PHD in social science, and is a self-taught musician that manages to thrive with both avenues.

Radiant Baby shares the inspirations behind his sound on this new album below.

How did you become drawn towards making retro/synthwave music?

I started producing electronic music in the summer of 2013. Before that, I was playing music casually, but I had been wanting to focus more intensively on music for a while. I had just met my girlfriend that summer and the energy I felt from the relationship motivated me to go for it musically.

What does your current software/hardware setup currently consist of?

I recorded my demos for this album with a Juno-106, Prophet Rev2, an old synth with a string machine and organ and Arturia plugins. Then, I recorded more synths, guitars, drums and bass in the studio for the final versions.

Outside of music, what inspires you?

Scientific papers, I’m kind of a nerd.

What kind of relationship do you have with the internet? How does this inform your artistic expression?

There’s some really inspiring artists out there. However, I try to not spend too much time on the Internet. My inspiration comes a lot from music I listen to and from personal experiences. When I go through strong emotional experiences, I feel driven to make more music.

As a performer or as a member of the audience, what single show has been the most memorable for you?

The launch of my first EP in 2017 was very memorable. This was my first official release so it felt very significant. All the people I care about were there, so the atmosphere was very warm.

Any new or upcoming artists on your radar?

What can we expect from you in the near future? Any upcoming projects or gigs in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?

I’m probably going to play more shows in the upcoming year, especially in the summer of 2022.
