Consisting of band members Matt King (vocals/multi-instrumentalist), Michael Claxton (bass/synth), and Moshe Fisher-Rozenberg (drums/synth) Absolutely Free is a band that mashes electronic influences from all areas. The result is a culmination of synth-pop and experimental soundwaves. The latest release from the dynamic band is their album Aftertouch via Boiled Records. Consisting of 8 mind-bending tracks, each song explores the human condition amidst the ever-evolving advancement of technology.

We chatted with the band and got their thoughts about their forthcoming endeavors.

Describe a pivotal music moment for you in your favourite film, television show, brand partnership etc. Has this influenced any of your own compositions?

Not my favourite film, but I’ll never forget the first time I heard the score of John Carpenter’s Halloween.  It was the first time I consciously noticed how music was affecting my experience.  If you watch that film on mute, it just feels like a low-budget student production.  Add the music; it’s an experience.

How did you become drawn towards making retro/synthwave music?

We love all kinds of music, but retro/synthwave has a perfect mix of groove, texture, and subtlety.  Just perfect.

What does your current software/hardware setup currently consist of?

We record to Ableton with the help of a small collection of outboard preamps, compressors, and effects processors.  The Roland Space Echo is also a staple.

Synths include Jupiter-8, Roland SH2000, ARP Odyssey, Realistic MG-1, Juno-60, Ensoniq ESQ-1, Technics SY-1010, Prophet 5/

Outside of music, what inspires you?

Human interaction, mostly on the “kind” side of things.  Also disappointment.

What kind of relationship do you have with the internet? How does this inform your artistic expression?

The internet is a vital tool for creativity and discovery, mixed with a deep chasm of complete and utter shit.  Getting the mixture right is key to a productive day/life.

As a performer or as a member of the audience, what single show has been the most memorable for you?

Performer: Playing to passers-by on the street, outside of the Hong Kong Arts Centre.

Audience: Melt Banana in Baltimore.

Any new or upcoming artists on your radar?

Yu Su (Vancouver BC).

Please suggest an album for us to listen to.

New: Parallel World – Cadence Weapon

Old: What’s Going On – Marvin Gaye

What can we expect from you in the near future? Any upcoming projects or gigs in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?

We have an interactive project that goes hand in hand with our song ‘Clear Blue Sky’ out now. We also have a new video for ‘Remaining Light’ coming out on Oct 15th, and a collection of ‘How to Paint Clouds’ remixes by artists we know and respect coming in the near future.

Famous last words?

“I guess it’s clear sailing from here!”
