Rome-based electronic maverick Panoram has unveiled his latest sonic experiment, ‘The Question’, released under his Wandering Eye imprint. Known for his off-kilter compositions, Panoram has built a devoted following in the IDM community, amassing over a million streams across platforms. His genre-defying approach has earned praise from tastemaker publications like Pitchfork, Electronic Groove, and The Vinyl Factory, as well as appearances on NTS and Boiler Room. With a history of performing alongside legends like Kraftwerk and Gold Panda at Sónar Festival, Panoram continues to push electronic music’s boundaries, with none other than Thom Yorke including his work in a curated playlist for Sonos.
Despite his rising influence, little is known about Raffaele Martirani, the enigmatic figure behind Panoram. For the past decade, he has also been a key member of Amen Dunes, touring extensively across the U.S. and Europe, gracing festival stages at Primavera Sound, Roskilde, and Pitchfork Festival. His solo work under the Panoram alias thrives in a liminal space between abstract pop, experimental synth work, and ambient textures. Releasing on esteemed labels like Firecracker and Running Back, his sound resists categorization, melding detuned synths, lounge influences, and cyborg funk into an intricate sonic mosaic.
‘The Question’ is a hypnotic blend of chillwave, dreamwave, and experimental electronica, echoing the immersive soundscapes of Com Truise, Boards of Canada, and Oneohtrix Point Never. The track’s airy synths and vocoder-drenched hook set an ethereal tone, with the phrase “that is the question” morphing throughout. As reverb-drenched drums and psychedelic synths weave through the composition, the track gradually dissolves into a slow-burning, dreamlike conclusion. The accompanying artwork, crafted by surrealist photographer Ben Zank, further enhances the song’s enigmatic aura.
Explaining his inspiration, Panoram revealed that the track was initially created for a video project. “The idea was to focus on the moment right after a question is asked, when the subject reacts physically before answering,” he shared. “It’s a beautifully suspended moment where anything is still possible.” This sense of ambiguity and introspection permeates ‘The Question’, solidifying Panoram’s reputation as an artist who thrives in the in-between, crafting music that feels both elusive and deeply resonant.
